WiFi Collapse at a High-Profile Product Launch Threatens Brand Reputation

A prominent corporate event organiser in Singapore was preparing for a major product launch at a large indoor convention space, expecting 5,000 attendees over two days. The event was designed to showcase next-generation consumer technology, with live demonstrations, real-time social media integration, and digital registration. The venue provided its own standard WiFi infrastructure, which the client assumed would suffice. On the first morning, within 30 minutes of opening, the network collapsed. Attendees could not access event apps, scan digital badges, or post to social media. Presenters lost connectivity during live demos. Initial Assessment Revealed a Complete Lack of Capacity Planning and Network Segmentation

When TYPENT was called in mid-crisis, our engineers arrived on-site within three hours and conducted an immediate site survey using spectrum analysis tools from Ekahau. We discovered that the existing infrastructure relied on a small number of consumer-grade access points, poorly distributed and operating on overlapping 2.4 GHz channels. The network had no load balancing, no client isolation, and a single VLAN handling all traffic—registrations, media streaming, staff devices, and guest access. Peak concurrent device count reached 7,200, far exceeding the network’s theoretical capacity of 2,400. Bandwidth allocation was unmanaged, allowing a few high-usage devices to saturate links. The upstream internet feed was a single 100 Mbps circuit with no redundancy. There was no monitoring or alerting system in place, so the venue team had no visibility into performance degradation until users began complaining en masse.

We Deployed a Temporary High-Density WiFi 6 Network Using Aruba Access Points and Instant On Controller Architecture

With less than 12 hours before Day Two, we designed and implemented a parallel network. We installed 48 Aruba AP-515 access points strategically placed to eliminate dead zones and manage signal overlap, using predictive modelling from Aruba AirWave to optimise placement. The access points were connected to two stacked HPE 5406Rzl2 switches configured with link aggregation and VLAN segmentation—separating guest, staff, registration, and media traffic. We provisioned two bonded 500 Mbps fibre circuits from different providers to ensure redundancy and aggregate bandwidth, terminating them on a dual-wan configuration in a Palo Alto PA-5220 firewall for traffic shaping and security. The network was managed through Aruba’s Instant On cloud platform, enabling real-time monitoring, automatic channel optimisation, and client load balancing. We also implemented a captive portal with splash page branding and rate limiting per device to prevent bandwidth hogging. The entire system was powered via existing PoE switches, with backup power supplied through mobile UPS units placed at critical distribution points.

Day Two Delivered Stable Connectivity with 99.8% Uptime and Zero User Complaints

On the second day, the network supported sustained concurrent usage of over 6,500 devices with average throughput of 18 Mbps per user. The captive portal logged 4,872 unique authentications, and no user reported connectivity issues. Social media activity surged by 300% compared to Day One, with real-time posting and live streaming functioning without interruption. The client’s internal team reported that registration throughput improved by 40%, and all live demonstrations ran smoothly. The event concluded successfully, and the client later received positive feedback from stakeholders on the seamless digital experience.
